Quotation Analysis #4

"'I'm so sorry, Henri,' I whisper in his ear. I close my eyes. 'I love you. I wouldn't have missed a second of it, either. Not for anything,' I whisper. 'I'm going to take you back yet. Somehow I am going to get you back to Lorien. We always joked about it but you were my father, the best father I could have ever asked for. I'll never forget you, not for a minute for as long as I love. I love you, Henri. I always did'" (437).

John says this to Henri as he is about to cremate Henri's corpse. This emotional scene shows John's true love for Henri and how much Henri meant to John. Henri was always kind and gave advice and did his best to keep John safe; he died keeping John safe by sacrificing himself. John and Henri's relationship is portrayed the best through this quote.

Literary Devices in Chapter 19-20

  • "Then I walk out and through the house and into the garage, which is dark and smells of gasoline and old grass clippings" (Lore 220).
  • "Various tools have rusted with disuse and hang on the Peg-Board walls. The truck sits in the center of the garage, covered with a large blue tarp that's coated with a thick layer of dust" (Lore 221).
  • "The truck is small, dark blue, room inside for only two people, or maybe a third if they don't mind an uncomfortable ride sitting in the center" (Lore 221).
  • "In the waning light I can see a river curling gently around that seems to cup the city, serving as the border to the east, south and west, and to the north lie hills and trees" (Lore 225).
  • "We stand looking up at the two-story house with gray vinyl siding. The front walk leads to an unpainted front porch with a broken swing hanging unevenly to the side. The grass is long and untended. It looks uninhabited, but there is a car in the driveway at the rear" (Lore 228).
  • "...just then a man walks out of the front door. He is huge, at least six feet six, two hundred fifty pounds. He has a goatee and his head is shaved. He's wearing work boots, blue jeans, and a black sweatshirt pulled up to his elbows. There is a tattoo on his right forearm, but I am too far away to see what it is. He spits into the yard, then turns around and locks the front door, walking off the porch and heading our way" (Lore 228).
  • "The windows are dark, each one covered with a white shade... There is a small concrete patio leading to a back door, which is locked... Overgrown weeds and bushes left over from summer" (Lore 230).
  • "The foul stench of dirty laundry covered in sweat that has never dried" (Lore 231).
  • "I hear somebody stand from a chair, the creak of footsteps on a hardwood floor approaching" (Lore 231).
  • "Glow-in-the-dark stars are stuck to the ceiling. They seem out of place, more like something belonging in a ten-year-old-girl's room" (Lore 233).
  • "The smell of mildew reaches my nose... The rafters are littered with cobwebs" (Lore 235).

Image Analysis #5

This is a magazine that Sam Goode reads avidly. When Henri and Sam are discussing alien conspiracy theories, Sam brings up the Mogadorians which puts Henri and Alex in a state of panic. Sam tells the two that he read the theory in the magazine They Walk Among Us, and Henri seeks out the publishing company in order to find how they are aware of the Mogadorians and their plot to take over Earth.

Image Analysis #4

This is the school that John attends while living in Paradise, Ohio. A large amount of the book occurs here, like John meeting his new friends in Paradise. The war in the final scene of the book also occurs here, and that is one of the key scenes of the novel.

Literary Devices in Chapter 4

  • "'Don't stand out or draw too much attention.' 'Just a fly on the wall'" (Lore 24).
  • "It's a beagle with tan floppy ears, white legs and chest, a slender black body. He's thin and dirty as if he's been living on his own. He rubs against my leg, whines, tries to get my attention" (Lore 27).
  • "He's fat and mostly bald, except for a few long hairs at the back and sides of his head. His belly reaches over his belt. His eyes are small and beady, set too close together" (Lore 29).
  • "His shoes click upon the newly waxed floor. The air smells like fresh paint and cleaner. Lockers line the walls" (Lore 31).
  • "'We're happy to have you. I like to think of us as a close-knit family'" (Lore 31).
  • "She is somewhere around sixty, wearing a pink wool sweater and red plastic glasses attached to a chain around her neck. She smiles widely, her hair graying and curly" (Lore 32).
  • "The needles feel like nails now. Nails that have been put in a furnace and heated up until they're glowing" (Lore 36).

Literary Devices in Chapter 3

  • "It is dark out, but there is a pale glow to the west. We pass by farms with horses and cattle, then barren fields, and beyond those, it's trees as far as the eye can see" (Lore 18).
  • "And then we find it, tucked away in overgrown vegetation, a rusted silver mailbox with black lettering painted on the side of it that reads '17 Old Mill Rd'" (Lore 19).
  • "Weeds grow throughout the gravel drive, which is littered with potholes filled with tawny water" (Lore 19).
  • "In the dark there is an eerie look to it, like whoever last lived in it was scared away, or was driven away, or ran away" (Lore 20).
  • "The house is one story. Wooden clapboard. Most of the white paint has been chipped away. One of the front windows is broken. The roof is covered with black shingles that look warped and brittle. Three wooden stairs lead to a small porch covered with rickety chairs. The yard itself is long and shaggy. It's been a very long time since the grass was last mowed" (Lore 20).
  • "Inside most of the furniture is covered with white sheets. Those that aren't covered are coated with a thick layer of dust and dead insects. The screens in the windows look brittle to the touch, and the walls are covered with cheap plywood paneling. There are two bedrooms, a modest-sized kitchen with lime green linoleum, one bathroom. The living room is large and rectangular, situated at the front of the house. There's a fireplace in the far corner. I walk through and toss my bag on the bed of the smaller room. There is a huge faded poster of a football player wearing a bright orange uniform. He's in the middle of throwing a pass, and it looks like he's about to get crushed by a massive man in a black and gold uniform" (Lore 21).

Literary Devices in Chapter 2

  • "It is light pink, almost like cake frosting, sitting ten feet above the ground on wooden stilts. A palm tree sways in the front" (Lore 10).
  • "He is wearing khaki shorts and a black polo. He is very tan, with an unshaven face that seems downcast" (Lore 10).
  • "I'll even miss the smell of sulfur from the rotting seaweed at the base of the shore, the way that it fills the house and penetrates our dreams while we sleep" (Lore 12).
  • "The waters pass below us. They are calm and the moonlight is shimmering on the small waves, creating dapples of white in the crests" (Lore 14).

Roleplay #7 - Sarah

All around me are orange, licking flames hungry for fuel and wood. Eerie, loud screams reach my ears. It takes me a moment to realize they are mine. Each breath becomes harder and harder to intake and I realize the oxygen in the house is running out. Is this how I am going to die? Stuck on the second floor of my ex-boyfriend's house? My eyes shut as I try to block out the sounds around me. Mark's two dogs are with me. I am not going to die alone. It will be okay.
A loud noise comes in the direction in front of me. My eyes spring open and I see a sillouhette. Dark blonde hair and a muscular build becomes apparent. John! John has come to save me. I feel a smile reach both of my ears until a support beam crashes between us, and my screams start up again. John stares at the beam intently and it flies up. Confusion ripples through me, but John is already at my side. He helps me stand and gives the bulldog for me to hold.
"You came," I say, and can't help but laugh in joy. He's come to save me, this boy I am so desperately in love with.
"No one, and nothing, will ever hurt you as long as I'm alive," he replies. I feel him pick me up and hold me to my side as he holds the golden retriever to his chest. We jump over chasms and move as quick as we can down the hallway. John looks over at the window; it breaks open and I scream. Jumping from the second floor is a confirmed death.
I look at John and he seems unafraid. He turns to look at me and pulls me to his side.
"Hold on tight," I hear, and I am pulled through the window. I close my eyes but do not feel the glass or pain beneath me; instead, I see both of us flying through the window. We hit the ground with a thud and I land on top of John. Tears come involuntarily at what I have just gone through and I feel John's arms around me. I smell singed hair and realize it is mine.

Sirens come into focus. John turns to me and I cry into his shoulder, in need of his comfort. He sets me down and asks if I can walk.
"I think so," I say.
"Follow me."
He tells me he needs a change of clothes as we walk through the woods.

I decide to break the silence and get some clarification.
"What just happened, John? What is happening?"
"You were in a fire, and I got you out of it.
"What you did wasn't possible."
"It is for me."
"What's that supposed to mean?"
I see his eyes search me and a million thoughts seem to run through his head. I wish I could have a peek of what he was thinking about.

He takes a deep breath and I see he is nervous.
"I am not who you think I am."
Confusion courses through me.
"Who are you?"
"I am Number Four."
"What's that supposed to mean?"
He stops walking and I see a solemn, overcast look in his eyes.

"Sarah, it's going to sound stupid and crazy, but what I'm about to say is the truth. You have to believe me."
I raise my hand to the side of his face to provide comfort. "If you say it's the truth, then I'll believe you," I say quietly.
"It is."
"Then tell me."
"I am an alien. I am the fourth of nine kids sent to Earth after our planet was destroyed. I have powers, powers unlike any human, powers that allow me to do things like I did in the house. And there are other aliens here on Earth who are hunting me, the ones who attacked my planet, and if they find me they will kill me."
For a moment, I think he is joking. I expect John to say to me, "Just kidding! I got you!" but it does not come. After searching his face, I realize what he is saying and look into his eyes.
"You're telling me the truth."
"Yes, I am." I see a pleading and searching look in his eyes. This is the boy I love. He would not lie to me.
I nod and continue looking into his eyes. Relief seems to spread through him and his body visibly relaxes.
"Thank you for saving my life. I don't care what you are or where you're from. To me you're John, the boy I love."
"What?"
"I love you, John, and you saved my life, and that's all that's important."
"I love you too. And I always will."

I feel his arms around me and his lips upon mine. In that moment, I realized that everything would be okay - as long as I had him and we had each other.

Roleplay #6 - Henri

From the corner of my eye, I spot a Mogadorian aiming his weapon at John. I can't let him be harmed... I don't know if he remembers one of our conversations, but I told him that if I let him die on my watch, I would never be able to forgive myself.
Facing the Mogadorian with new resolve, I have made up my mind. John is looking the other way, at a different Mogadorian's cannon right as I jump. The beast absorbs the blow of the first cannon and he turns to see me jumping. I see confusion, then comprehension dawn on him. He knows I am sacrificing myself for him. He knows it and I know it is worth it.
A searing, white hot pain rips through me. It seems to spread from where the cannonball hit me, filling my every inch with pain. I cannot go on like this. John pulls himself towards me and I try to stay alive. Every breath hurts, every movement pains me, I feel myself fading, fading, fading...
John pulls me into his lap. I smile weakly to reassure him that everything is okay, but we both know it is not. While reaching a blood-stained hand up to touch his face, my smile transforms into a grimace of agony. I am so glad to have been able to see John grow up. I remember when I first saw him, playing in the field with Hadley. How time has flown. Faintly, I hear John talking, bringing me back to reality.
"I'm here... I'm so sorry, Henri. I'm so sorry. We should have left when you wanted to."
"Shh," I say. "It's not your fault."
"I'm so sorry," John says, and he begins to cry. My heart reaches out for this kind boy, wise beyond his years, caught in such an unfortunate situation. I would have loved to see him with a wife and children one day.
"You did great," I manage to whisper. "You did so great. I always knew you would."
"We have to get you to the school," he says. "Sam could be there."
"Listen to me John. Everything... Everything you need to know, it's all in the Chest. The letter." I will him to remember this and the importance of my words. He can only survive with what is in the chest.

"It's not over. We can still make it."
I try to manage a smile but instead feel my eyes closing. He shakes me gently, and I will my eyes to open. Something warm runs from my mouth, and my body seems to get colder.
Focusing my attention on John, I continue as best as I can. "Coming here, to Paradise, it wasn't by chance." He does not understand, and I do not expect him to. "Read the letter."

"Henri," he says. He wipes the blood off my chin, and we maintain eye contact.
"You are Lorien's Legacy, John." My time is getting short. "You and the others. The only hope the planet has left. The secrets..." My speech dissolves into a coughing fit. I feel blood come out with it, and closing my eyes seems to relieve some of the pain. "The Chest, John."

He squeezes me and I feel his body warmth. It does little to help, and my breathing becomes weaker and weaker.
"We'll make it back together, Henri," I hear John say. "Me and you, I promise."
As I try my best to continue, my body feels like it is lighter. I begin to cough more. "Be strong... This war... Can win... Find the others... Six... The power of..."
The sounds of war are dimmed and John and I both know it is time for me to go. He places his hand on the side of my face and I look at his for the very last time. Slowly, John's face begins to become my beautiful wife's face. It is almost time. I will see you very soon, I try to say to her. In my mind, she seems to smile and nod with comprehension. I let out sigh of relief and reopen my eyes to see John again.
"I wouldn't have missed a second of it, kiddo. Not for all of Lorien. Not for the whole damn world," I tell him, smiling. And with those last words, everything goes to black and I know I am gone.

Quotation Analysis #3

"'Thank you for saving my life. I don't care what you are or where you're from. To me you're John, the boy I love.'
'What?'
'I love you, John, and you saved my life, and that's important.'
'I love you too. And I always will.'"
-Conversation between Sarah and John (318).

In the novel, Sarah becomes trapped in a house burning on fire. In order to save her, John uses his fire resistance powers to get her out. After escaping, Sarah asks John as to how he saved her; she also saw him use his telekenesis powers to move support beams. John decides to explain to her that he is an alien and tells her the back story. Afterwards, he expects her to not believe him and run away. Instead, Sarah decides he is telling the truth and confesses he is in love with her. John realizes he reciprocates her feelings and confesses his love to her as well.
John never wanted to tell Sarah (or anyone else) the fact that he was an alien because he thought she would not believe her. The fact that he trusted her enough to open up to her is a symbol of trust and love. Additionally, the fact that he admits his love to her confirms that he trusts Sarah like no other and is deeply in love with her.

Thematic Analysis #2

Another recurring theme is the theme of survival. The entire novel revolves around Number Four's survival, as the fate of Lorien lies in him and five other children around the world. John is being hunted by the Mogadorians, and they will not rest until they kill him and the other five children. It is up to Number Four and the five others to survive and restore Lorien.
Henri, Number Four's Cepan, also realizes how Number Four must survive. In one of the last few scenes of the novel, Henri sacrifices his life to save Number Four from being killed. Before Henri's death, he also trained Number Four to fend for himself. These powers are essential to power, and without his powers Number Four would be defenseless.
Since the book is about Number Four staying alive, survival is a key theme of this novel. Number Four sacrificed a father-like figure and used his powers to survive the attacks of the Mogadorians. Because of this, I am Number Four revolves around the theme of survival.

If I Cast the Movie

Number Four/John - I think Sam Claflin would suit this part well. He is well built and young, like John is described in the book. Claflin's hair is already brown and John's hair is described as blonde and brown; John is also supposed to be attractive and I think Claflin is. Personality wise, Claflin seems quiet and reserves a certain kind of calmness that Number Four does as well.

Sarah Hart - Emily Osment would be appropriate for this role. There are obvious physical similarities; both have blonde hair and blue eyes. Sarah is very kind and bubbly, and Osment seems to portray that in both interviews as well as her role in Hannah Montana. Osment seems like Sarah in nonfiction form.

Henri - Ben Stiller is the appropriate age to play this part. He has also played serious roles. Henri is mostly a serious person who is focused on keeping John safe. He is also intent on training John to protect himself. Henri is also very kind and fatherly and Stiller has played fatherly roles as well.

Sam Goode - To say the least, Michael Cera is awkward. San is also on the shy, awkward and nerdy side, and Cera portrays this well. Not much is said about Sam's physical appearance but I think Cera embodies Sam's described lankiness.

Mark James - From Tom Felton's infamous portrayal of Draco Malfoy, everybody knows that Felton is the perfect bully. Mark James relies more on brute force than biting sarcastic remarks, unlike Malfoy, but Felton is well built. Felton also played a bully that used more force in The Rise of the Planet of the Apes. Because of this, I think Felton would embody Mark James well.

Image Analysis #3

This is the news article that would have appeared when Sam's dad disappeared. His father disappeared while running errands and only his glasses were left behind. Because of this, Sam wore his dad's glasses in order to see the world the way his dad did. He hoped that in wearing these glasses, he could see what his dad's last vision was before going missing so he could see why his dad disappeared.

Roleplay #5 - Mark James

Today was the first day of school and this douche decided to talk to Sarah, my ex. Of course, he's the new kid, which means he doesn't know anything about our school... which also means he doesn't know to not get on my bad side. And getting on my bad includes flirting with my ex. I'm still not over Sarah. She's mine and she always will be, even if she doesn't believe so.
Sarah is one of the prettiest girls in school. I don't understand why she broke up with me, considering I'm such a great guy. We go together well.
I taught that new kid a lesson today and intimidated him into backing off. After cornering him, he ran off. Ha, what a coward. I don't think he'll get in my way anymore.
I have an interview for a newspaper soon because I'm the star quarterback of the team. I'm really looking forward to it because Sarah will see what she's missing out on and then she'll come back begging to be with me.
Everything will fall into place soon enough. Patience is key.

-Mark

Roleplay #4 - Number Four

Today was my first day of school in Paradise, Ohio. It's such a small town that our real estate agent's daughter, Sarah, found me straight away at school. She's beautiful, to say the least. Sarah was really the only one who seemed to welcome me in the school, except for some other kid (more on that later).
I think I'm developing a large crush on Sarah. She's very kind and told me about how she used to date the quarterback but realized there was more to life than just being popular. She makes me laugh and she makes me happy, and when I'm around her I get really nervous. This is bad because it will make leaving Paradise hard, but these feelings are worth it.
The other kid that talked to me today was a nerdy kid. He seems to be into aliens and cosmic-related things. After I talked to Sarah, Mark (Sarah's ex) hit me with his backpack. The kid came up and told me I would be better off not getting involved with Sarah because Mark gets really jealous. Thanks for the concern, bud, but I'm not scared considering I have superhuman strength and could easily fend him off.
I may befriend him tomorrow. He seems low-key and it's better to stay under the radar so I can leave more easily.

-John

Roleplay #3 - Sarah

There's a new boy in school and he's really cute! His name's John. My mom told me to look out for him because she sold a house to him and his dad. He seems nice but a little... guarded. When I first started talking to him, he treated me really suspiciously. Also, I shook his hand today and it was really hot. Perhaps he was sick.
We have Chemistry and Home Economics together, and we made pancakes in Home Economics together :) We ate off the same plate instead of like the other pairs, who ate off different plates. I really really really hope he likes me back and something will happen between us. Again, he's really cute and kind and much better than my ex Mark James.
Speaking of Mark, he was super rude to John today. He gets so jealous and is always trying to win me back whenever I even talk to another guy. He doesn't understand that I don't like him, not in the slightest. The thing is, he just won't let me go. You'd think he'd understand that I broke up with him for a reason, but it won't get through his thick head. He's a bully and I don't like him at all.
I'm looking forward to school tomorrow to see John again. I hope we can talk more.

-Sarah

Roleplay #2 - Henri

Number 4 has been scaring me lately.
In short terms, he's growing up... more quickly than with what I'm comfortable with. He's started to agree with what I tell him, unlike when he was younger, when he would obey my instructions. He's beginning to make his own choices and - sometimes - go against my own wishes.
And that would be okay, if we were normal humans, or if we were still living on Lorien. I'd let him grow up and find himself. That would be fine.
But the thing is, we're not. We're aliens living on Earth and we're being hunted. It's especially unsafe for him to go against (some) of my explicit actions with his powers forming. He doesn't know what he's capable of. I do.
Hopefully he'll listen to more of what I say. I'll talk to him when he gets home from school.

-Henri

Roleplay #1 - Number Four

Henri and I decided to move from Florida to Ohio. I am no longer Daniel and Henri has decided that I will now be John Smith, which is alright with me. Sometimes I get sick and tired of having to move around so much.
Back in Florida, we were truly beginning to settle down and I felt almost normal, which is strange. You would think being an alien would not allow me to feel "normal" under any circumstances, but being in one place for so long let me make friends and I... I felt like one of them. I felt accepted and that I could live there for the rest of my life, to forget about how I have to get back to my home planet and everything else.
When my scar appeared, that was when everything came back to reality. I knew that we couldn't stay in this beautiful town any longer, and so did Henri. We're on the way to Ohio now.
I hope that one day we will be able to both settle down in one place, but I know this isn't possible when the Mogadorians are still around and seeking to kill us all.
Especially because I know I am next.

-Number Four, or John

Thematic Analysis #1

One large, recurring theme is the theme of environmental sustainability. The conflict the book revolves around, the Mogadorians vs. the Garde children, stems from environmental sustainability. After the Mogadorians used up all of the natural resources on their own planet, Mogadore, they moved on to conquer another planet reach with natural resources in order to replace their own. This was the planet of Lorien. The Mogadorians killed everyone on the planet Lorien and ended up using all of those resources as well. Mogadore and Lorien, both beautiful and flourishing planets, are now dead due to the carelessness of the Mogadores.
Earth is the next target of the Mogadorians. They plan to take over Earth for its resources with no consideration for the wildlife and the inhabitants of this planet.
In a way, it seems like the Mogadorians are the human race. Most humans do not care much about the environment and replenishing its resources; they are more concerned about the quality of living they have as well as money. This is not a healthy mindset as we are shortening the lifespan of our planet; one day, we may have to find a new planet to live on too.

Book Review

"I Am Number Four is the first in the Lorien Legacies series about nine alien kids with special powers, or Legacies, from the planet Lorien, who are hiding on Earth from the Mogadorians. The Mogadorians are sinister beings who want to kill them and destroy Earth like they destroyed Lorien.
Three of the nine kids have been killed, and Number Four, the protagonist of this book, is next.
The mysterious author, Pittacus Lore, is described on the back cover of the book as Lorien’s ruling Elder and having been on Earth for the last 12 years, preparing for the war with the Mogadorians.
Now obviously this book is a work of fiction, but I like the idea that it could be true. Do I believe that there are aliens? Of course I do. The universe is so vast, I think we’d be arrogant to think that we’re the only intelligent life forms living in it.
Do I think that this particular story about the Loriens and the Mogadorians is believable though? Not so much, even factoring in suspension of belief and all that. I mean, forget about all the super powers, healing stones, shape-shifting animals, and all that stuff for a moment. It’s the simple details that gets me.
Firstly, every time Number Four and Henri, his guardian, have to move, they move within the United States. Why? Why can’t they move to some other country in some other continent? Wouldn’t that be more effective if they really wanted to hide from the Mogadorians?
I understand that there are nine other Lorien Legacies and if they meet each other, the spell that they can only be killed off in the order of their numbers will be broken, but I’m quite sure that there are more than nine countries on Earth.
Secondly, just how clueless can Number Four be that he fails to notice that Bernie Kosar isn’t a regular dog? The dog runs into one part of the woods and then appears from the other side; don’t you think that’s more than just “peculiar”? Wouldn’t a supposedly intelligent person have guessed that there was more to Bernie Kosar, especially since he had already seen the Lorien animals in his dream-memories?
Also, the way the Mogadorians were described, and the way they killed so easily and so quickly before, with Numbers One to Three, you’d think that with so many of them surrounding Number Four and his friends, that they’d be killed just as easily.Sure, the difference is that Numbers Four and Six have gotten their legacies already, but seriously, as ruthless and strong as the Mogadorians are, how are Mark and Sarah able to get close enough to hurt them, much less kill them, so extremely easily and without getting hurt themselves?
I won’t even go into character development, except to say that most of the characters were shallow and not very likable. I liked Bernie Kosar though; I thought he was the best character in the book. There are so many problems with this book that make it hard for me to really enjoy it, but I won’t go into all of them. I’m sure it will make for a great movie with all the special effects and all, but I expected a lot more from the book." -Betty Wong

I Am Number Four is about one alien kid of nine total that are destined to save their native planet. They have all been moved to Earth and are hunted by a different alien species - the Mogadorians. The Mogadorians used all of the resources from their own planet, Mogadore, and took over Lorien to have more resources. All of the Lorien inhabitants were killed except for the nine Garde children and their Cepans sent to Earth.
The Mogadorians seek to take over Earth for its resources as well, but first the nine Garde children must be killed. The first three kids have been killed which means Number Four, or John, is next.
I first heard about this book through my friends with similar book tastes. I picked it up, read the first few pages and was immediately hooked. The novel is a bit slow-moving at first, but I find the plot unique and worth reading. Once the book brought the Mogadorians in and closer to John and Henri, it became much more exciting and interesting.
Pittacus Lore's writing style is easy to understand and the characters he creates are relatable and likable. The characters also have negative traits as well instead of being the epitome of a perfect character. I did not find anything bad about the book except for the vocabulary - it may have been a bit too easy. Also, some of the romantic parts were a little too cliche.
Overall, I Am Number Four mixes romance, suspense and action very well. It is a good read if you are into fantasy and/or sci-fi novels. I know that I liked this book enough to read the rest of the series.

Quotation Analysis #2

"'I wouldn't have missed a second of it, kiddo. Not for all of Lorien. Not for the whole damn world,' he says, and when that last word leaves his mouth I know that he is gone" (424).

Henri tells John this as Henri is dying. He was hit by a Mogadorian weapon and John gently holds him as he lies on the ground. Henri was a father figure to John and was the only constant in his life. He always provided John with advice and fatherly comfort. This quote was Henri's last words to John in the war. It sums up Henri and John's relationship with one another.
In the book, their relationship is a huge component as to what happens and how the events play out. The two put each other before anything and anyone else. If something happens to one, the other goes out to find and save them. Henri and John are easily best friends as they travel together. When Henri was killed, John was upset and resolved to survive and restore Lorien.

This is what I imagine Lorien to look like before and after the Mogadorians came. Lorien is described as a planet, ten times smaller than Earth, with plenty of natural resources. Many animals and other organisms thrived. The Mogadorians arrived to take over Lorien's resources, as their planet, Mogadore, had run out. A war happened and all of the remaining Lorien inhabitants were killed. The Mogadorians took over the planet and used up all the resources once again, creating a barren wasteland with no signs of life. This is why the Mogadorians seek to take over Earth - to use Earth's resources as they have, again, ran out.

Quotation Analysis #1

"Kill them all, I think. Fight nobly and honorably and may you kill them all" (422).

This is John's thoughts during the war. He was using his animal telepathy to communicate with the huge Mogadorian beast. When John saw this beast, he knew something was different about it from the get-go. Unlike the other beasts, this one had no rage in its eyes and its cries sounded more sorrowful. John could read its thoughts and how its hard life and abuse from the Mogadorians led it here on Earth. He then proceeded to tell the beast about his own life, like how he fell in love and how he was sorry for what the beast had to go through. He also told the beast about his old home on Lorien and what the Mogadorians did to it. John proceeded to ask the beast to fight the Mogadorians because he was too weak and said the above quote.
This quote also summarizes John's entire mentality of his fight with the Mogadorians. He insists on fighting nobly and honorably, instead of being cowardly and running. John knows what he must face and finds courage within himself to face it at all times.

http://images.wikia.com/iamnumberfour/images/9/9a/Symbol.jpg

This is the symbol assigned to Number Four. The Garde children were given certain symbols by the Lorien elders. It is a sort of charm that bonds all nine of the children together. When a Garde child dies, their symbol is burned into the skin of the remaining Garde children. This allows the Garde children to keep track of who has been killed by the Mogadorians and who is next to be killed.

Character Analysis - Bernie Kosar

Bernie Kosar is a Chimæra. Chimæras are an animal species native to Lorien. They can transform into any animal. It is suspected that some of these animals traveled to Earth with the ship that brought the Garde children and their Cepans. Bernie Kosar serves as a sort of guardian for Henri and John.
While living in Florida, John remembers a certain lizard that seemed to follow him wherever he went. He thought this was absurd as there were many lizards in Florida, but he was sure that this lizard followed him as he went to school. Later, this lizard is revealed to be Bernie Kosar.
While in Ohio, a stray beagle comes up to John on the first day of school. This same dog appears at John and Henri's house and walks inside. John and Henri decide to keep it. During the school year, John would run to school (running at speeds up to 70 mph) with Bernie Kosar running alongside him. John found it strange that a dog could run so fast but accepted it. Only until the end of the book does John find out it is a Chimæra. During the war, a large beast is about to attack and eat a weakened John. Everything seems hopeless until Bernie Kosar stands in front of John and transforms into a dragon to fight the beast. Through telepathy, Bernie Kosar tells John to get away for his safety. This is also when John discovers his ability to communicate with animals through the mind.
Furthermore, John has a flashback to when he was young and still living on Lorien. He remembers playing in the fields with Hadley, or Bernie Kosar's original name. Hadley would transform into various animals to play with John.
When John left Ohio, Bernie Kosar went alongside him to serve as protection.

Character Analysis - Mark James

Mark James is the quarterback of the football team at the high school. He has black hair and gels it up. His sideburns are "meticulously trimmed" and he has dark eyebrows and eyes. He is a senior.
Mark used to date Sarah and became incredibly jealous the first day that he saw Sarah and John talking. Mark is still not over Sarah and becomes angry with John. He bullies John on the first day of school and continues to until John beats him up. Mark proceeds to make a truce with John and stays out of his way for a while.
Mark showed Henri the video of John saving Sarah from the house fire and flying out the window. Henri then takes Mark with him to school to find John and get him out. This is when the war starts, and Mark helps with defeating the Mogadorians. He also carries John off the field when he is passed out.
At the end of the book, when John is leaving, Mark and him share a friendly conversation. They end on good terms when John leaves Ohio.

Character Analysis - Sam Goode

In Sam Goode's first appearance, he is described as "gangly with thick glasses... He's wearing a black NASA T-shirt and jeans, and can't weigh more than a hundred pounds. He has a handheld telescope and is scanning the sky..." On the first day of school, Mark James hits John with his backpack and John begins to follow him. Sam quickly stops him, saying that Mark James is dangerous and he should not get involved with Sarah or Mark may hurt him.
At first glance, Sam seems like a nerdy kid who is obsessed with space and alien-related things. John assumes this about Sam as well and the two become best friends. After John has gained Sam's trust, Sam tells John that he does not actually need his glasses; they were his father's. Sam also tells John that his father disappeared one day after running errands and only his glasses were left on the ground. Sam is intent on finding out what happened to him. He wears the glasses because he thinks he may be able to see the world how his father did, and will hopefully be able to see what his father last saw. Sam also tells John that he believes aliens took his father, which is why he is so obsessed with alien conspiracy theories and reads alien conspiracy theory magazines. As Sam is explaining all of this, John becomes very tempted to tell the truth about how he is an alien, but decides to hold it off in that particular moment.
On Halloween night, Sam, Sarah and John all go to a haunted Halloween hayride. The "monsters" are the members of the football team. They manage to get the three isolated to beat up John and teach him a lesson for becoming so close to Sarah. John uses his powers to beat up all of the football players and also has to use lumen, or the power to create light from the hands. Sam suspects something is up with John then and John sarcastically tells Sam the truth. Sam realizes how absurd he sounds for thinking John is an alien and drops the matter.
In one of Sam's magazines, They Walk Among Us, the Mogadorians are mentioned and Henri and John immediately become on guard. Henri goes to the offices of the publication and does not return for a while, causing John to worry. John and Sam then go to the offices to find Henri and John ends up engaging in a fight with the workers there. After finding Henri, who was captured, John used his telekinesis powers to interrogate one of the office workers there. This is when John tells Sam the truth, that he is indeed an alien and he is running from the Mogadorians. Sam believes his father was abducted by the Mogadorians.
Sam is loyal to John. He also participates in the war and kills a Mogadorian, saving John's life. Sam also drives John to a hotel while he is passed out. At the end of the novel, when John is leaving, Sam goes along with him to continue the search for his father.

Character Analysis - Sarah Hart

Sarah Hart is described by John as "shocking beautiful." She has straight blond hair that goes past her shoulders, ivory skin, high cheek bones, and soft blue eyes. On the first day of school, she is the first to talk to John, or the new kid. She is charming and is on good terms with most everyone in the school. Her mother is the real estate agent that sold the house to Henri and told her to keep an eye out for John on the first day of school to make him feel welcome.
Before the novel, Sarah was a cheerleader and dated the quarterback of the team, Mark James. She became a very mean person through their relationship and her parents helped her realize that. Over the summer, they quickly sent her off to Colorado to realize that life is not about looking pretty, being popular and dating the quarterback. Upon arriving home, she broke up with Mark, quit cheerleading and instead became passionate about photography and nature.
Sarah becomes John's first friend in Ohio. They share a few classes together and John quickly develops a crush on her. Mark, Sarah's ex, becomes jealous of how much Sarah and John are interacting on the first day. He is obviously not over her and develops a large hatred for John. Sarah is always quick to defend John and obviously does not like Mark very much.
Sarah, John and Sam (John's best friend) are invited to Mark James' house party. The house is lit on fire by a few people on accident and Sarah is trapped in the house. John saves Sarah from the fire using his fire resistant powers. Sarah knows something is not right with him and he tells her the truth - that he is an alien. She does not care about this and confesses that she is in love with him afterwards.
In the war at the school, Sarah saves John's life by stabbing a Mogadorian. When John passes out, he wakes up the next day in Sarah's bed with her sleeping alongside him. John is all patched up and Sarah tells him about how he was brought back to the house. She asks if he has to leave now, which he confirms. John must leave Ohio in order to protect Sarah from being hurt as well. Sarah has already packed his belongings and, as John is leaving, tells him that she is in love with him and will wait for him to come back. John promises that he will return for her because he is in love with her as well. The two kiss goodbye and John moves onto his safer location.

Character Analysis - Henri

Henri is also from the planet Lorien. He is Number Four's Cepan. Cepans have no powers, but are supposed to train and instruct the Gardes about their abilities. Cepans are also assigned to the Gardes at a young age so they can guide the Gardes well.
Number Four and Henri left Lorien together, along with the other eight Gardes and their Cepans. Henri and John have moved around the country many times in order to protect their identities. Sometimes, John thinks Henri should leave him and settle down, fall in love, and make a family. The two know this is impossible. Henri had a wife back on Lorien, but was forced to leave her when the Mogadorians attacked.
Whenever Henri and John move somewhere new, the two are always established as father and son. Henri does his best to advise John in life, so it does not feel unnatural for the two to say they are blood related. At the end of the book, John tells Henri that he was like a father to him.
Henri does not reveal much about his past life to John; it can be assumed that it is too sad of a topic to be discussed for him. John does have a flashback to back when he lived on Lorien, and he remembers when his grandfather first introduced Henri to him as his Cepan. Back in Lorien, Henri's name was Brandon.
At the end of I am Number Four, Henri is killed by a Mogadorian weapon, aimed at John. Henri jumps in front of John to take the blow and dies.
In the novel, Henri is fifty years old. He moved to Earth with Number Four at the age of forty. He is usually tired, but also as kind and very much like a father figure. He is also hardworking and focused on keeping John safe.

Character Analysis - Number Four

Number Four is the main character in this novel. He is sixteen years old and is one of the Garde children. Number Four, or John Smith, does not remember much of his home planet Lorien, but he does have occasional flash backs. John has moved twenty-one times in his life with his Cepan, Henri, as described in the beginning of the book. In this book, he has moved to Paradise, Ohio. John befriends Sam Goode and Sarah Hart. Sam quickly becomes his best friend and Sarah and John also start dating; the two soon fall in love.
Throughout the book, Number Four's Legacies, or powers, are developing. His first Legacy that develops is "lumen", or the capacity to create light from the hands. He then develops the legacy of fire resistance. Henri trains John by dousing him in fire and seeing how long John can hold his breath and fight while being engulfed in flames. After a while, John also develops telekinesis. He can control items with his mind, such as moving and suspending heavy objects, stopping daggers, and unlocking doors. At the end of the novel, he also discovers that he has the ability to communicate with animals through the mind. He has had this power for a while and figures it out only when talking to his Chimera, which is an animal from the planet of Lorien that can transform into any animal form it wants.
Number Four is a well-intentioned young man. Sometimes, attributed to the fact that he is still young, he rushes headlong into situations without regarding the consequences. For example, when a house was on fire with Sarah still inside, he rushed inside to get her out and flew out the back window without thinking about being more secretive to protect his identity. A few people saw and told the police, but John managed to use his clever mind to spin a story that made it sound like the others were hallucinating.

Number Four is always on his toes. He is aware of everything going on around him and is ready to fight or run at any moment. In one scene, he is on a haunted Halloween trail with Sam and Sarah. He hears a few noises in the forest and immediately becomes on his guard in anticipation of being attacked. It turns out everyone does get attacked, but Number Four manages to fight everyone and protect his friends with minimal effort. He is taken by surprise, but it does not affect him.
In I am Number Four, Number Four is mostly described as a good kid who wants a normal life, but is unable to due to the fact that he is a child of the Garde. He does not have many bad traits, except he is rash at times and does not consider what could go wrong. He is mostly focused on protecting his identity, the ones he loves and himself.
