Sarah Hart is described by John as "shocking beautiful." She has straight blond hair that goes past her shoulders, ivory skin, high cheek bones, and soft blue eyes. On the first day of school, she is the first to talk to John, or the new kid. She is charming and is on good terms with most everyone in the school. Her mother is the real estate agent that sold the house to Henri and told her to keep an eye out for John on the first day of school to make him feel welcome.
Before the novel, Sarah was a cheerleader and dated the quarterback of the team, Mark James. She became a very mean person through their relationship and her parents helped her realize that. Over the summer, they quickly sent her off to Colorado to realize that life is not about looking pretty, being popular and dating the quarterback. Upon arriving home, she broke up with Mark, quit cheerleading and instead became passionate about photography and nature.
Sarah becomes John's first friend in Ohio. They share a few classes together and John quickly develops a crush on her. Mark, Sarah's ex, becomes jealous of how much Sarah and John are interacting on the first day. He is obviously not over her and develops a large hatred for John. Sarah is always quick to defend John and obviously does not like Mark very much.
Sarah, John and Sam (John's best friend) are invited to Mark James' house party. The house is lit on fire by a few people on accident and Sarah is trapped in the house. John saves Sarah from the fire using his fire resistant powers. Sarah knows something is not right with him and he tells her the truth - that he is an alien. She does not care about this and confesses that she is in love with him afterwards.
In the war at the school, Sarah saves John's life by stabbing a Mogadorian. When John passes out, he wakes up the next day in Sarah's bed with her sleeping alongside him. John is all patched up and Sarah tells him about how he was brought back to the house. She asks if he has to leave now, which he confirms. John must leave Ohio in order to protect Sarah from being hurt as well. Sarah has already packed his belongings and, as John is leaving, tells him that she is in love with him and will wait for him to come back. John promises that he will return for her because he is in love with her as well. The two kiss goodbye and John moves onto his safer location.
