Character Analysis - Sam Goode

In Sam Goode's first appearance, he is described as "gangly with thick glasses... He's wearing a black NASA T-shirt and jeans, and can't weigh more than a hundred pounds. He has a handheld telescope and is scanning the sky..." On the first day of school, Mark James hits John with his backpack and John begins to follow him. Sam quickly stops him, saying that Mark James is dangerous and he should not get involved with Sarah or Mark may hurt him.
At first glance, Sam seems like a nerdy kid who is obsessed with space and alien-related things. John assumes this about Sam as well and the two become best friends. After John has gained Sam's trust, Sam tells John that he does not actually need his glasses; they were his father's. Sam also tells John that his father disappeared one day after running errands and only his glasses were left on the ground. Sam is intent on finding out what happened to him. He wears the glasses because he thinks he may be able to see the world how his father did, and will hopefully be able to see what his father last saw. Sam also tells John that he believes aliens took his father, which is why he is so obsessed with alien conspiracy theories and reads alien conspiracy theory magazines. As Sam is explaining all of this, John becomes very tempted to tell the truth about how he is an alien, but decides to hold it off in that particular moment.
On Halloween night, Sam, Sarah and John all go to a haunted Halloween hayride. The "monsters" are the members of the football team. They manage to get the three isolated to beat up John and teach him a lesson for becoming so close to Sarah. John uses his powers to beat up all of the football players and also has to use lumen, or the power to create light from the hands. Sam suspects something is up with John then and John sarcastically tells Sam the truth. Sam realizes how absurd he sounds for thinking John is an alien and drops the matter.
In one of Sam's magazines, They Walk Among Us, the Mogadorians are mentioned and Henri and John immediately become on guard. Henri goes to the offices of the publication and does not return for a while, causing John to worry. John and Sam then go to the offices to find Henri and John ends up engaging in a fight with the workers there. After finding Henri, who was captured, John used his telekinesis powers to interrogate one of the office workers there. This is when John tells Sam the truth, that he is indeed an alien and he is running from the Mogadorians. Sam believes his father was abducted by the Mogadorians.
Sam is loyal to John. He also participates in the war and kills a Mogadorian, saving John's life. Sam also drives John to a hotel while he is passed out. At the end of the novel, when John is leaving, Sam goes along with him to continue the search for his father.
