One large, recurring theme is the theme of environmental sustainability. The conflict the book revolves around, the Mogadorians vs. the Garde children, stems from environmental sustainability. After the Mogadorians used up all of the natural resources on their own planet, Mogadore, they moved on to conquer another planet reach with natural resources in order to replace their own. This was the planet of Lorien. The Mogadorians killed everyone on the planet Lorien and ended up using all of those resources as well. Mogadore and Lorien, both beautiful and flourishing planets, are now dead due to the carelessness of the Mogadores.
Earth is the next target of the Mogadorians. They plan to take over Earth for its resources with no consideration for the wildlife and the inhabitants of this planet.
In a way, it seems like the Mogadorians are the human race. Most humans do not care much about the environment and replenishing its resources; they are more concerned about the quality of living they have as well as money. This is not a healthy mindset as we are shortening the lifespan of our planet; one day, we may have to find a new planet to live on too.
